What is the name of the book with the antagonist character named Alekhin?

I read a book once that told the story of an american pilot of native american ancestry, who is imprisoned by russians, escapes, makes his way across russia, and before escaping to alaska, waits for and kills another indian man who was tracking him. I loved this book, and would like to read it again, only I can't remember the title or author. Anybody also read this one?
