Is there anything wrong with shopping at a thrift store?

I've seen so many thrift stores in the city and my mother has always claimed that it's not safe to shop in one of those places because everything in there is gross and diseased and I might get some type of irritation or infection if I buy any clothing or shoes and things like that from thrift stores. Is that true?
