Cleaning the inside of a velvet lined trunk?

I bought a beautiful little wooden trunk from a thrift store, the inside is lined with velvet or some material that looks and feels like velvet. I'm just wondering what the best way to clean out the inside would be. Whoever owned it before left a mess of something inside.
